Viviendo en Columbia Heights

Historia

-

As the birthplace of America, Arlington, VA has a storied history. Columbia Heights, the pocket neighborhood in the popular suburb, has developed and evolved over the centuries alongside the major city. At the heart of the area, and the reason for its development, lies the Columbia Pike. The major road was originally constructed during the Civil War as a path into the Union-led capital.

Following the war and the creation of Arlington National Cemetary, Columbia Heights went from a sparsely inhabited and remote area to a residential area. Once the Pentagon completed construction in the early 1940s, the neighborhood became densely populated. The neighborhood does not have any museums, but it takes less than 20 minutes on foot to reach Arlington National Cemetery. Every June, the Columbia Pike Blues Festival takes place at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse in the heart of the neighborhood.

Restaurantes y Bares

-

The small neighborhood has an abundance of eateries and taverns for meals on the go, romantic dinners or a night out with friends. All of the restaurants in Columbia Heights can be found on Columbia Pike.

For nights when Thai is the only answer, Bangkok 54 satisfies all of your cravings. Whether you need takeout for a night in or opt to eat in, the menu has a variety of options. The crispy spicy duck has a complex flavor that contrasts the crunchy texture, making it perfect for hunger pangs without being greasy or fatty. For the traditionalist, Pad See Ew Beef has a wide noodle base tossed with fresh veggies and a spice level of your choice.

The brunch scene in D.C. has a variety of amazing and highly sought after options. Twisted Vines Bottleshop & Bistro's breakfast menu provides a perennial favorite. The stack of banana pancakes piled high with whipped cream and fresh fruit have become a staple for diners. If you prefer savory dishes, the carnitas benedict provides a spicy twist on a classic dish.

After a long work week, William Jeffrey's Tavern has a great atmosphere for a casual drink with roommates. The establishment has more than 200 beers on tap, ensuring that just about everyone can find a favored brew. The establishment also plays host to celebrations and nights out on the town. With fresh oysters, local crabs and champagne by the bottle, stop in to toast your promotion or wish a dear friend a very happy birthday. Though Columbia Heights is outside of the city, Mazagan has a sleek design, sophisticated menu and uber chic atmosphere. The Moroccan restaurant also features a hookah bar. When it comes to cocktails, try the Mai Thai. A spin on the classic drink, this one uses fresh ingredients, a large cube of ice and high-quality rum. The happy-hour specials just might be the best way to sample the creamy hummus, smoky kefta and authentic dolmas.

Movies, beer and comedians just might make for the perfect combination of entertainment and a fun night out. The Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse brings in indie flicks, brand new releases and comedians Thursday through Tuesday every week. For the budget conscious folks, it only costs $2 to see a movie on Mondays and Tuesdays. Cool Cow Comedy brings in comedians from all over the country, with $5 specials for featured shows.
