First inhabited by Native Americans, the land that Collegedale now occupies once formed a central battleground during the American Civil War. Incorporated in 1968, Collegedale receives recognition as the home of a respected private university, Southern Adventist University, which was established in 1916.

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, one of the most popular attractions in the area, provides visitors with a one-of-a-kind experience. Literally a moving exhibit, the train takes visitors for a ride while they absorb the historical knowledge their guide has to offer. The museum hosts a number of events throughout the year. Pricing varies based on the type of event and number of people.

Locals rave about Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, which serves up tasty food and on-point service. The wood-fired grilled salmon, one of the restuarant's signature dishes, comes accented with a flavorful vegetable medley and mashed potatoes. The mixed greens and praline pecan salad makes an appetizing precursor to any meal. For a complete dining experience, try something decadent from the dessert menu -- such as the creme brulee cheesecake. The restaurant even makes flourless chocolate cake for those following gluten-free diets.

For a relaxed, diner-style experience, locals go to City Cafe Diner. Regulars keep coming back for the plentiful portions and highly recommend the cafe's breakfast items, particularly the quesadilla and burrito omelettes. All omelettes include a side of home fries or grits. The diner also tempts customers' tastebuds with a display of towering, frosted cakes. Locals say the hummingbird cake (a banana pineapple spice cake common in the South) is to-die-for and so large that three people can split a slice of it. Not only does City Cafe's food earn great reviews for its flavor, but the prices are also reasonable.

For a social night out that involves live music, locals go to Sky Zoo, a lively venue with stellar entertainment. Known for its friendly atmosphere and diverse crowd, the establishment houses pool tables, darts, karaoke, and three full bars. Hosting an array of musical acts, Sky Zoo exudes more of a club vibe at night. Open seven days a week, this place has plenty of televisions for customers looking to catch the big game.
