The town spent some time as part of Indian Territory during the Indian Removal Act of 1830, with famous son Will Rogers' family being part of the Cherokee removed from the southeast.

The city is on the historic Route 66 and has a number of sites that were popular when the Route was still being actively traveled. There are also a number of historic homes and businesses that have been preserved for public appreciation. The Robson Performing Arts Center hosts a number of concerts, dance competitions, theatrical presentations and other community happenings.
