Viviendo en Airport Heights

Historia

-

As an overflow suburb of Anchorage, Airport Heights began as a nearby neighborhood designed to attract residents looking for a short commute to work in the city. Founded in 1954, University of Alaska Anchorage introduced a younger population of students to the area. Now the largest university in the state, the school still brings new students looking for housing each year.

The development of Alaska Regional Hospital in 1976 also brought more residents to the area looking for work, further establishing Airport Heights as a self-sustainable community. With its emphasis on winter sport parks, Airport Heights acted as home to Scotty Gomez, a two-time Stanley Cup winning hockey player. The neighborhood committee even decided to name the hockey rink in Tikishla Park in his honor.

Although most theaters and arts venues require a trip to downtown Anchorage, residents can still find access to a theater by visiting the Eccentric Theatre Co. With a different play showing every month, Eccentric Theatre Co features classic, contemporary and original plays. Visitors can also enjoy a wine and snack bar during intermission.

Wendy Williamson Auditorium acts as another great theater, although it lies further from the neighborhood than Eccentric Theatre Co. The venue has acted as host to numerous annual events, with the most notable being the Banff Film Festival. Wendy Williamson usually hosts student-friendly acts such as comedians and bands due to its close proximity to the University campus.
