Acerca de esta casa
The Cabin is where the indoors and outdoors mesh. Enjoy the outdoor shower and marvel at the trees while you rinse your hair. Spend lazy days lounging in the hammock. Or sit in the screened-in porch and see all manner of wildlife: foxes, birds, bears, deer... The cabin is secluded on a private hilltop surrounded by trees but is also walking distance to 3 restaurants and 2 markets. It has fluffy clean towels and linens, A/C and all the modern amenities you'll need for the perfect stay. Classic Woodstock Artist's Cabin Historically a haven for a few famous musicians, writers and aritsts. Jack Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs... all spent time here. There is a good chance The Band also frequented the house. • 100 years old, but newly renovated • On 3 wooded acres • Screened in porch • A/C • W/D • 20 foot ceiling • Outdoor shower • Clawfoot tub with a view • 2 desks • Excellent wifi: you will have no trouble having simultaneous zoom calls and watching Netflix at the same time • Charcoal BBQ • Firepit • hammock • Nest Radiant Heating System • Big fireplace • Restaurants + grocery store walking distance I don’t really get why certain spaces make you feel a certain way, but the spirit of this house got me the minute I walked in. It has been a gathering place for artists from the time it was built back in 1912. Each owner was an artist. Many accomplished and well-known. As far as we can tell, the original owners were 2 women. One a writer, the other an illustrator. Together they made children's books. Next a young NY couple who summered here for over 40 years. She was a concert pianist and played at Maverick. They named the place Treblecliffe (an hommage to the artist's colony Byrdcliffe). They put up the treble clef hook in the bathroom which is still there over 75 years later. I spent a good hour on the phone their daughter (now 85). She practiced the cello in the studio (now collapsed but slated to be rebuilt). The couple who lived here next were beatniks. The husband was the printer in Jack Karouac's book "The Subterraneans". He was a painter, poet and musician. He also owned a print shop on 8th street in NYC close to the White Horse. Karouac had dinners here as did Allen Ginsberg and William S. Boroughs. They were also friends with Bob Dylan who likely spent time here. His manager, Albert Grossman, owned almost all of the surrounding property. When I got the house, no one had lived in it for over 10 years. There were holes in the roof. Vegetation was taking over. Woodland friends had moved in. There were a few bits of furniture, and personal items left behind. Anything that wasn't too damaged has been salvaged and reused or re-purposed. Maps on the wall, a few portraits, baskets, carvings, figurines, classical LPs... Also the piano stool is here to honor the musicians. Last little bit that might be of interest: there is a mural on the shed outside. It is an abstract of the Ashokan reservoir. It is over 60 years old, and we are planning to have it restored in the fall. The space itself is inspiring. Serene. Calming. So many windows letting in soft, natural light. The house is surrounded by tall pines, oaks, willows, hemlocks, birch and beach trees. The main space has a 20 foot ceiling. It's lofty, airy, and wonderful. The bathrooms are brand new and pristine. Hand made tiles and marble counters on a 1920s table in the one bathroom. All new appliances. The marble countertop in the kitchen is antique and came out of a bakery in Saratoga. The timbers making up the counter were salvaged from a collapsed studio on the property. The main bath and kitchen have heated floors which is just amazing in the winter. The fireplace is magical with the original swing arm and the owl andirons. If you're here for summer months, there's ample AC to keep you nice and cool and there's a firepit and BBQ outside. The old claw foot tub has been reglazed and moved to the loft window where you can relax and look out at the forest. There's also an outdoor shower if you like to get clean in the outdoors. Look up, see the trees and the sky as you rinse your hair. You will likely see a fair amount of wild life. Deer, chipmunks and red squirrel are very common. Black bear in season. I've also seen wild turkeys and it is a great place for bird watching.
