This area's mix of all American dining and international cuisine gives residents a variety of food options.

For good old-fashioned American barbecue, check out Britt's BBQ on Main Street. Britt's has a family-friendly atmosphere, with kids under the age of 12 eating free as long as they're with a paid adult. Rib lovers should definitely try the baby back ribs, which Britt's considers the filet mignon of ribs. The option to get a half order means even smaller eaters can clear their plates.

Those who prefer the taste of Italy should visit Chef Hannes Restaurant. The restaurant cooks your food fresh when you order it. Have a glass of wine while you wait and enjoy the elegant ambiance. If you like seafood, get the grilled fresh salmon filet, served with arugula and black olives.

Stix and Straws provides fast but fresh food at an affordable price. The restaurant has a casual vibe, with several meal choices served on sticks, leading to the restaurant's name. If you like a little of everything, try a four-stick combo. Wash it down with the acai berry brilliance, a tropical drink made from real fruit.

The nightlife in the area tends to be casual and more mature than the wild party scene of the nearby beaches. One popular hangout, the Purple Orchid, brings the island spirit to El Segundo with tiki torches, bamboo and a blowfish on the ceiling. The jukebox lets you choose your own song, but there's a stage area for live music as well. If you like umbrellas in your drinks, give it a try, and make sure to order at least one volcano bowl.

Originally occupied by Native American tribes, Standard Oil chose this largely uninhabited area in 1910 to be the site of its second oil refinery. The growth of the refinery led to the growth of the entire community. It became a manufacturing hub during World War II, but the city's population leveled off after the 1960s, allowing it to maintain the feel of a small town.

The El Segundo Museum of Art showcases a diverse collection of art from around the world. The abstract, silver-lined exterior provides an eye-catching contrast from the surrounding buildings. The pieces include only numbers stenciled next to them without description, to allow the viewer to form his own opinion of the art. Those who wish to learn more can sign up for one of the museum's many art programs.

Major brands combined with charming smaller shops make for a unique shopping experience in El Segundo.

Shop for a new pair of slacks at J. Crew, grab a couple movies at Best Buy and finish up with some grocery shopping at Whole Foods Market, all located at Plaza El Segundo. Conveniently located on Sepulveda, this plaza provides one place to stock up on the essentials or just have fun browsing. The plaza slows down more on weekdays, so visit then if you don't enjoy crowds.

Boutique shoppers have plenty to enjoy in this neighborhood. For original styles at an affordable price, check out Frocks & Rocks. This brick and mortar shop spices it up with a bright pink heart in the window, a sign of the edgy street wear you'll find on the inside. If you need help choosing an item, the helpful staff all have knowledge of styles and trends. Varga specializes in high-quality yet reasonably priced clothes for women of all sizes, and the friendly staff make everyone feel at home.

The neighborhood has multiple grocery chains for a familiar shopping experience. If you enjoy farmers markets, the El Segundo Farmers Market runs every Thursday afternoon. Centered on Main Street and Holly Avenue, it covers two blocks and has certified organic produce along with other organic foods. It can be a fun place for kids too, since certain vendors offer shaved ice, kettle corn and balloons.

Bring the whole family and play some games, or just take in the view at Recreation Park. It has the equipment and space for plenty of different sports, including tennis, skateboarding, basketball and baseball. Dogs can roam around here too, so bring them along to burn off some energy. The park holds an annual Easter egg hunt which tends to bring in a lot of families. The baseball fields serve as a launching ground for the El Segundo Fireworks Spectacular, another annual event, this one taking place on the Fourth of July.

If you're looking for something a bit more low key, check out Hilltop Park. An ideal place to have a picnic, the park features playgrounds, tables and even a kiddie pool for those hot summer days. The name comes from the park's location atop a hill, so you'll have an unobstructed view of the community up here.
