Restaurants

Although Round Rock lacks a central restaurant district, Deer Run residents have access to a number of locally acclaimed dining options sprinkled throughout the area. American cuisine, Tex-Mex, sushi bars, shaved ice and specialty sandwich shops are just a few of the choices Round Rock offers.

Patrons of Miso, a Korean and Japanese combination restaurant, enjoy the sushi bar's wide range of ethnic dishes at affordable prices. Locals rave about the Korean bulgogi, a plate of stir-fried beef, chicken or spicy pork with marinated vegetables. On the Japanese front, katsu is another crowd favorite. The entrée comes with deep-fried chicken or pork drizzled with a special cream sauce, mushrooms and various vegetables.

The Blind Squirrel on Mays Street specializes in sandwiches. Its use of premium ingredients has created a loyal base of customers who come in for gourmet sandwiches, such as The Quacker and the Chicken Maximus. Piled high with pulled tea-smoked duck, napa cabbage and hoisin sauce, The Quacker has all the unique fixings you could want. The Chicken Maximus is an excellent choice for health-conscious diners. Open every day of the week, the eatery offers daily specials, including a soup of the day and dessert.

If ambiance plays an important factor in your choice of restaurants, pay a visit to The Scarlet Rabbit, an Alice in Wonderland-themed restaurant on West Main Street. Although the idea may sound cheesy, the decor is surprisingly charming and well-thought-out. While you're enjoying the scenery, try a plate of fried mac and cheese with Hatch chiles.

For nightlife, locals venture down to The Brass Tap for a pint of beer and live music on the weekends. Roadhouse is another local hot spot that hosts live music, karaoke, open jam nights, and some of the best beer and liquor prices in town.

History

In 1851, the small community of Bushy Creek was formed near a large rock in the middle of a creek bed. The rock was used to transport horses, wagons and cattle across the creek. Three years later, the first postmaster of Brushy Creek renamed the town Round Rock, after the famous rock. As the city began to develop in the late 1800s and early 1900s, cotton, grapes and row-crops served as the area’s main resources and drove the economy well into the 1950s.

Although Deer Run residents can't find any museums in Round Rock, the area has a strong arts scene, driven by the Round Rock Art Council. ArtSpace on East Main Street hosts monthly artist exhibits, while the Round Rock Chalk Walk is an annual festival that features sidewalk chalk art from various artists and hosts a number of activities, games and free crafts for children and families.

Transportation

Deer Run residents have a number of options for public transportation, including two buses: the Demand Response Bus Service and CARTS Interurban Bus service. The Howard Metrorail also provides service in the area.

With several different cab companies available, taxis are costlier alternatives if you’re in a hurry to get somewhere. Uber also serves as another option in Round Rock. If work requires you to take the highway, Interstate 35 is less than five minutes away, making commuting hassle free. Although Round Rock has bike lanes in almost every major area, heavy traffic can make cycling dangerous.

Cost

With a slightly lower cost of living than Austin, the Deer Run neighborhood enjoys affordable living, shopping and transportation fares. The general cost for a one-way ride to the city center on the Demand Response Bus is $5, with discounted fare options for people under the age of 12, over the age of 60, with disabilities or with low income. A one-bedroom apartment run an average of $886.13 per month, while a beer at a local pub costs about $3.50. Gasoline prices are friendly as well, typically costing 7 percent less than the national average.

Shopping

Shopping in Deer Run consists of a mixture of corporate retailers, boutiques and gift shops. The boutiques found alongside Interstate 35 are perfect for weekend shopping trips or days when a new watch or vintage piece of clothing is something you can’t live without. Unique jewelry and women’s clothing can be found at Sweet Love & Sugar Britches. Major retailers such as IKEA and World Market can also be found along the strip.

For groceries, Deer Run residents head to H.E.B. on Louis Henna Boulevard for a large selection of essentials at low prices or Randalls on Gattis School Road for a marginally pricier selection of higher-quality goods. If you’re interested in a large selection of high-grade organic foods, locals insist that Sprouts Farmers Market is the place to go.

Parks

Deer Run has a great sense of community and offers a variety of recreational activities and parks to its occupants. With a number of parks for children, pet owners and fishing enthusiasts, there’s something for everyone.

Parents love Creekside Park, a scenic area with a playground, a picnic area, a drinking fountain and clean restrooms. The Round Rock Dog Depot is perfect for dog owners and features two separate areas for large and small dogs to play without a lead. Get a bit of exercise in with a round of disc golf at Old Settlers Park, which also offers sand volleyball, swimming, and fishing.

The area hosts a number of annual events, including Austin’s New Year, Taste of Round Rock, Young Latino Art Exhibition, Mix ‘N’ Mash, Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, and the Louisiana Swamp Thing & Crawfish Festival.
