Property Ratings at Cougar Court Apartments
When going to collect the keys the day the lease started, we were informed the old tenants never returned their keys, and new locks would need to be installed. Even though our lease had started, we didn't need to move in on that specific day, so we told the person we would come back in a few hours for the keys, after she offered to unlock the door for us. That afternoon, we went back, and the keys still weren't ready. However, we wanted to look at the apartment, so the girl working at the Cougar Courts office let us in. Upon entering the apartment, we found used paper towels all over the living room floor and cleaning supplies. However, the girl who opened the apartment couldn't find the cleaning lady. As we were leaving from looking at the apartment, the cleaning lady showed up. The next day, we called Cougar Courts to see if our keys were ready. We left a message and never got a response. We stopped by in-person late that afternoon, and the keys were still not ready. The girl working in the Cougar Courts office gave us a maintenance key until we could get the new keys. One day later, we got a phone call from someone telling us he'd received a service order from Axiom. After working with him, we were able to get the keys for the apartment. When we did our apartment check-list, we found the apartment was filthy and had several broken and missing items. There was urine and hair on the toilet seat, yellow/sticky spots on a door, food and dog hair in the dishwasher, crumbs in the oven drawer, food residue under the stove range, yellow grease stains and dog hair on the kitchen ceiling, filth on the shelf in the closet, dog hair on top of the kitchen cupboards, dog hair on the walls throughout the apartment, filth in the bathroom drawers, dust buildup around the bathroom vents, dog hair and dust above the fridge, crumbs in the kitchen drawers, massive amounts of dust and dirt build-up on the utility closet doors, and a thick/greasy film on the cupboards in the kitchen. After several days of unanswered emails and unreturned phone calls, we were finally able to get a hold of Axiom. Another cleaner was sent and did clean some of the mess, but the apartment still was very dirty. So, we got in contact with Axiom again, and they sent another cleaner. The new cleaner did a decent job, but the apartment still wasn’t very clean. We ended up spending a total of 27.5 manhours cleaning the apartment.
When we moved in, the carpets were so dirty and didn't look like they've ever even been vacuumed let alone cleaned. There are streaks all over the walls and patches to cover up holes are poorly done to not even match the correct color or texture. These are definitely not pet free apartments. Out of the 5 other apartments in our stairwell, every single one of them has a dog. There's supposedly a designated place for animals to do their business and it is "monitored" which is a joke because I see owners letting their dogs take a dump or per anywhere, including the sidewalks. Gross. The laundry is the most expensive laundry I've seen in town. The washers are tiny. There is a set of dryers that have been broken for over a year. If we put a sign on it saying it's broken, it keeps getting taken down even when it's not fixed so it steals your money for a broken dryer. Also, about the dryers, there are twice as many washers as there are dryers. You do the math. The exercise equipment....doesnt work. The dumpsters that are also "monitored" constantly have trash all around them put there by tenants. Management sends an email out every 6 months with empty threats about trash but does nothing to stop people from piling trash around the dumpsters. (Perhaps we need more dumpsters for the thousand people living here, just a thought. And no one is fooled by your "monitoring" since you don't do anything about it). We live here because it is cheap but I would never raise a child here because it is too dirty and there is no place that is urine or poop free for them to play outside. And also, there stairs are deadly in the winter. They might salt the first couple of steps but in Rexburg, that just melts the snow into water to then later freeze at night. Make sure you keeo a snow shovel because they don't plow the parking lots either. Good luck walking to church in the snow because your car will probably be stuck.
Managment lies to tenants and takes all of your money. Avoid at all Cost!
It took three months to send a guy to fix our leaky sink, and the guy who fixed our leaking wall didn't even replace the piece of base board that he removed or put the corner of carpet, that he pulled up, back the way it should be done so its loose. We've been told they would come fix the lock on our apartment door three different times but it's never happened so there's a safety concern. When we came to move in, there was mold, dog pee all over the carpet, the bathroom smelled of urine, and nothing was wiped off or swept or vacuumed. Apartment cleanliness upon arrival is not as promised in the contract. They called us liars and said the apartment WAS cleaned, so we had to demand a different apartment that was actually clean which they did to get us off their backs. The gym is a broken treadmill, an elliptical, a defective rubber-pull home gym, and nothing else. They have tried to swindle us out of our money by charging random invalid fees. They are condescending. Their laundry costs a fortune. I don't recommend it.
I was very excited to live here because of how affordable the apartments were. Well it turns out you pay for what you get. The apartment definitely hadn't been cleaned before we moved in because there was still dried food on the outside of the cabinets. The management only on their own side and don't try to understand your needs or situation. I have a friend who used to work for maintenance who quit after the manager told him just to paint over BLACK MOLD rather than clean it properly and fix the cause of the mold. I would not recommend these apartments to anyone.
The apartments are nice. The ward was interesting, and somewhat closed off to new people. They say that the apartments are pet free, but that is not true. Tons of people have dogs.
