Where I'm renting now is great. Nice clean apartments. They keep up the lawns there self. I have never rented from a place that was so well taken care of. They have a gate in the front to get in to the apartments. Makes you feel safe and secure. They are super nice when it comes to taking care of things that are wrong and in a timely manner. I can see myself renting for a while.
Not Worth It.
I absolutely cannot wait to move when our lease is up. When I first moved here, I actually really loved it, but as soon as they dropped their military contract and jacked up their prices, it just went downhill. It's way too expensive for mediocre living. The management is awful and they charge insane fees for everything. If anyone is considering moving here, I highly suggest you find somewhere else unless you don't mind throwing away money. When we first moved in, it was obvious that our neighbors had lived here for years and were settled in, but as soon as Commando Village dropped their military contract they moved out as fast as they could. I wish I had followed their lead. It pains me to admit that I have lived here for two years. Last year, the Friday before our lease was up they called us into their office to talk about our options. Basically, they were raising our rent by $100 and if we didn't want to pay it, we had to move out BEFORE the following Monday. There was no way we could move out in time so we regretfully continued our lease for another year. They are making attempts at making living here more decent, but it's still not worth the price and the hassle of having to deal with them. They added a dog park, which is nice, but definitely not worth living here. Your utilities go through them, so there's no way of actually knowing how much you should be paying and how much they're charging you. Parking is a nightmare. You have a one car garage, which is nice, but you have to manually unlock it, open it, drive in, and then close it. You can fit about 2 cars in your drive way (one behind the other) but it's a pain if you have to constantly get someone to move their car. Some units have added their own additional parking spot in the yard. There's no parking on the right side of the street, which makes it ridiculously hard to have guests over because there's hardly ever any room on the left side. Management is supposedly letting new residents to choose their paint colors and options, but I think you have to pay extra for that. When we initially moved in, I was hoping to stay here for as long as possible because I loved it. Sadly, they have driven us out, along with the majority of the really nice people who lived here before all of the changes. If you're looking for somewhere to live in the area, you'll get a better value if you look for houses to rent, honestly. And if you do have this kind of money to spend on rent then you shouldn't even bother with this place. You can definitely get a nicer house around here for the same amount without all the drama. Please, save yourself.
When we saw the model townhome our initial reaction was "Wow, basketball/tennis courts so much storage and space inside and out for the money." Liked the idea of being in a "gated" community that actually used to be military housing. Unfortunately, the moment we moved into OUR townhome we noticed the differences between it and the model. Just to name a few of the many issues: the townhome has a musty odor (maintenance recommended that we put a freshener in the air vent), has a leaky storage room that was actually full of mold when we 1st moved in (six months in and we are hoping the latest attempt to fix does the trick), has "way past their prime" kitchen cabinets that were "shedding" onto the counters/food surfaces (the fix was to paint Kilz on the area), the tubs look like they underwent a bad patch job for some reason (we were told 6 months ago that a fix was being researched). The gate is sometimes left open all night (we've come home after Midnight and found the gate wide open before). Response from maintenance is VERY SLOW (sometimes taking two weeks)---Could be due to a large amount of maintenance requests versus the community's resources. Typically we would be patient, but this is unacceptable considering the time sensitiveness of most of the service requests. Even when a maintenance request is scheduled, some reason regularly pops up as to why no one actually shows up. The shared utility arrangement makes it impossible to confirm our billing which we were told would work to our benefit, but seems higher than we expected. We thought about giving the community 2 stars since it is quiet most of the time and does have a lot of space and a fenced backyard, but we can't get over all of the issues. The complex could use an inspection/audit and full renovation (some units have been renovated, but from what I hear those units still have issues).
I've lived at Commando Village for over a year now, and I have to say, I really do like it here. The staff is so nice and take care of my problems. My house is bigger than any apartment I could find. My kids love it here, too, since there are so many playgrounds. My one complaint is that there isn't a pool, but we are pretty close to the beach. Overall, we will definitely stay here until we PCS.
Nice idea but not well maintained
They were originally military housing. So they're well built and have fenced yards and garages. But for the price, I genuinely expected them to be better maintained. The tines are falling out of the dishwasher racks. The linoleum floors are very difficult to keep looking clean. The interiors are very dated (90s) unless you're willing to pay even more for a "remodeled" unit.
