With its hilly, wooded neighborhoods filled with large lots and picture-perfect houses mingling with high-rise apartment buildings and a downtown filled with locally-owned shops and restaurants, the small hamlet of Hartsdale is a hybrid of country and city -- this NYC suburb is located just northeast of Yonkers in the town of Greenburgh. This Westchester County hideaway is ideal for those who want to be near Manhattan but without the much-larger price tag.
Like most New York City neighborhoods, Hartsdale is very pedestrian-friendly with easy access to mass transit, including the Metro-North Railroad. The hamlet is rich with history, dating back to the American Revolution. George Washington met with a French general here -- the general was using the Odell House as his headquarters at the time. The Odell House, built in 1732, still stands on Ridge Road and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
