History of Fourth Ward

Charlotte’s Fourth Ward Historic District was founded in the mid-1800s and quickly became one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods because of its proximity to the downtown area. The city’s four wards were originally divided because of voting purposes, but residents and tourists alike still call these wards by their name. The 1920s saw a decline in residency within these wards, as residents gained access to streetcars and trolleys and began moving to the suburbs.

A revitalization effort began in the 1970s, as the City of Charlotte sought to enhance the Fourth Ward community by renovating homes and introducing businesses to the area, while preserving the historical significance of the suburb.
