Chic Plug-In Sconces for Renters

SconceBlog

It’s Kevin O’Gara here from interior design blog Thou Swell. I love a good lighting update, as it's really one of the foundational pieces of a space. However, it can be so hard to convince yourself as a renter to make that investment in a hardwired piece you know might be tricky to uninstall in a few years, or months, when you move. Renting also means that I've got to make any changes easy to reverse for the next inhabitant, which adds an extra little layer of challenge. One of my favorite fixes is adding ambient lighting, whether it’s a table or floor lamp — or a chic wall sconce. While wall sconces are harder to install for renters, they provide built-in light that gives a polished look to your room and provide light where you can’t necessarily use table or floor space for a lamp. They look great framing art, beside the bed (especially if you can’t fit a large nightstand), above the sofa, or even built into your bookshelves.

I've seen some really fabulous plug-in sconces that combine the ease of a lamp with the polished permanence of a lighting fixture. Sconces are a bit like art, hung on the wall and made to draw the eye, and you should treat them as such when you pick one out. Lightweight decor changes don't have to be just for renters either—a plug-in sconce is a great way to test out the look of one with low commitment, or to switch up your space easily and quickly. While hardwired sconces have to be installed by an electrician, plug-in sconces can simply be installed wherever you choose, given there’s an outlet nearby. While the cord will still show, it’s definitely the next best thing to the installed alternative. I’ve pulled together some stylish examples of sconces in modern rooms and some of my favorite sconces on the market. These pieces range from traditional to modern with lots of different sizes and shapes for any space. They range in price but can often be the same or (less) than table lamps and are often even more impactful. Draw inspiration from the selections below and try a sconce in your apartment or home!
