It is wrapped by rivers, with the Guyandotte River to the south and west and the Mud River to the north. The Ohio River is also minutes away, and several lakes are in and around the village. While it may be a scenic village with plenty of greenspace, Barboursville is home to the largest mall in West Virginia -- the Huntington Mall.
The Barboursville Historic District located downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes a barber shop built in 1870, a hardware building built around 1906, and the First National Bank dating to 1870. The Miller/Thornburg Store is the oldest building in the district, built in 1854. The village was founded in 1813 to serve as the Cabell County Seat.
The south end of the village is home to the large Barboursville Park, a 750-acre park with playgrounds, tennis courts, ball fields, basketball courts, a fishing lake, ponds, picnic areas, an amphitheater, a horse show ring, an archery range, a disc golf course, and walking trails. The park hosts a variety of village events, including the popular Fall Fest, the Jack-o-Lantern Walk, and the Christmas Parade.
