A long and thin strip of land bordered on either side by Burnet Road and Mopac Expressway, the neighborhoods of Allandale and North Shoal Creek enjoy easy access to their surroundings and a tight-knit community.

Though residents may hear occasional traffic and noise from the surrounding areas, the peaceful Shoal Creek cuts a path down the middle of the neighborhood, after which many of the nearby streets, businesses and even community organizations take their name. At approximately 5.5 miles from Austin's Downtown, the benefits outweigh the costs in this cozy tract of land.

Especially along West Anderson Lane, which cuts between the Allandale and North Shoal Creek portions of the neighborhood, residents enjoy the food and fun that draw many visitors from all around Austin to some of the dining options.

A local Austin burger concept, Hopdoddy Burger Bar entertains guests with incredible burgers such as the Llano Poblano, with Angus beef and Pepper Jack cheese, bacon and poblano chiles. Coming from local farmers, safe and healthy choices line this Southwestern-style menu.

While locations such as Hopdoddy also serve beer and other drinks, bars such as Cover 3 provide a high-end twist on a traditional sports bar, not to mention recognition from the American Bourbon Association for some of its stiffer drinks. Cover 3 provides locals with a place to enjoy Texas Monthly's "Best Burger in Texas" in an upscale, yet laid-back dining atmosphere.

At the nearby Texas favorite, Alamo Drafthouse, locals and visitors alike can watch the latest blockbuster, independent or classic film, while enjoying a meal or an alcoholic shake.

The main geographic feature around which this neighborhood resides, Shoal Creek, first formed when the semi-mountains of Travis County created a split where rainfall could collect in the area. Over time, individuals began using it as a boundary for Austin's west side, but the makeup of the area's residents remains relatively consistent.

The biggest and most noticeable changes have certainly come with many of the retail centers along Burnet Road and Anderson Lane, and the industrial area that follows alongside the Mopac Expressway to the west.

No museums operate in the area, but a quick jaunt southwest to the Texas Military Forces Museum affords visitors the opportunity to explore Texas history exhibits and military vehicles. Various galleries and schools, such as the Priscilla Robinson Studios, exhibit and train the next generations of budding artists, and help to keep the culture high in Allandale and North Shoal Creek.

Residents of the area have their pick of nearly whatever mode of transportation they choose. The extensive Capital Metro bus system has several regular, Rapid and Express routes that service the area frequently.

While the residential portions of the neighborhood remain a bit more difficult for stumbling across an errant taxi, cabs do not shy away from this neighborhood altogether. Car services such as Uber have definitely made an impact for the many traveling to the retail and entertainment on Anderson Lane.

Highways can be very easily accessed, as the Northwestern corner of the neighborhood rests at the intersection of the Mopac Expressway and Highway 183, and major roads such as Burnet and 45th Street make traveling anywhere easy. The neighborhoods rank as walkable, though many of the major roads lack biking lanes. However, despite this lack of catering to cyclists, many can find safe travels on the interior, residential streets tucked away from the busy rush-hour traffic.

Residents in Allandale and North Shoal Creek pay for the great location and easy access they enjoy to downtown Austin. Median rent for a one-bedroom residence averages $895.52 per month, which, while higher than Austin's average, still comes in a bit lower than those living downtown.

Transportation to the city core remains cheap, usually costing no more than $2 to $3 for a day pass. Residents enjoy gas prices costing about 7.5 percent lower than the national average, which makes capitalizing on access to highways such as Mopac and 183 ideal options for residents.

Basic entertainment doesn't come exactly cheap because of the hip and increasingly expensive businesses drawn to the area, which can cause even a simple pleasure such as a beer with friends to come in at anywhere from $4 to $8.

Shopping selections remain bountiful in the North Shoal Creek and Allendale region, and range from little boutiques to high-end luxury stores, to thrift and value stores. The local favorite, Petticoat Fair, has been supplying women with swimwear, sleepwear and intimate apparel since it opened in 1964. Whether you're looking to spice things up or find a new swimsuit for laps in the pool, Petticoat fits the bill.

Located down the block, Sea of Beads provides beads and tools for beadwork, as well as hosting classes and adding a unique, specialty craft store to the enviable mix of shops in the large retail centers.

Large food retailers such as Wal-Mart and others do serve the area, but pass those on your way to local favorites such as Fresh Plus Grocery on Anderson for health-food items and gourmet foods. While your favorite greens aren't available at farmers' markets in Allendale and North Shoal Creek, unique choices such as the Pars Mediterranean Supermarket and its selection of kebabs and gyros alongside grocery items make sure you never go to bed hungry.

Parks sprout up all along the Shoal Creek area, so follow the water to never be far from recreation. At Beverly S. Sheffield Northwest District Park, the city of Austin maintains a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, barbecue pits, a playground and enough picnic tables for a small army. With reservable facilities and 0.7 miles of trails, this kid-friendly, pet-friendly park focuses on family, with a fishing pier to boot.

Other parks sit directly next to various schools, so depending on the hours, they can make for great visits as well. And while these parks are less friendly to dogs, small parks such as Crestmont Park on Allandale's south side, provide perfect resting spots for joggers, as many of the smaller, residential streets suit running perfectly.
