Situated near the northern border of New York near Lake Ontario, Fort Drum is an expansive military base that’s been in operation since 1908. While the bulk of the area belongs to the base and its requisite facilities, the surrounding area, which includes Carthage, Watertown, and Evans Mills, has become a prominent locale for servicemen and staff who work on the base.
The rural charm of Fort Drum gives way to small towns with close-knit communities. There are modern apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes to be found around the base. Black River is an idyllic spot to live with its cascading falls and rapids in the center of town. Lake Ontario and an endless offering of aquatic activities are just a few minutes west. Westcott Beach State Park is a popular place to enjoy the mild summer of the Upstate. Fort Drum is far from secluded, though. Interstates 81 and 781 will carry you south to Syracuse or up towards the Canadian border.
