Between Bismarck and the border with Montana there is only one sizable town on Interstate 94, and that location is Dickinson, North Dakota. Set in big, rolling hills prairie land, Dickinson was first established in 1881 as settlers and prospectors pushed westward looking for land and ranching resources. Interestingly enough, the town was first settled and founded by a New Yorker -- W.S. Dickinson from Malone, NY.
Today, Dickinson is home to almost 20,000 residents, which is a growth of more than 2,000 new neighbors since 2010. Much of the grown has been associated with the oil industry boom the state has been realizing with shale deposit mining and the demand for technical labor in drilling and geology. In fact, with all the workers counted, some estimate that Dickinson has more than 30,000 residents, a good portion being oil workers.
