This is a town of working-class people. The arts district and casino have fueled a Southside resurgence that’s added higher-end restaurants and breweries to the mix with local favorites like Jenny’s Kuali and La Lupita. The revival is drawing record investment to the former industrial hub with almost 700 high-end apartments recently completed or currently in the pipeline. The original borough grew in the shadows of Lehigh University and the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. Twenty-six years after the plant went silent, the neighborhood of South Bethlehem is home to about 20,477 people and almost one-third Hispanic, formed in 1917. The residents have often shared in newspapers and forums their fears that the current luxury housing boom threatens South Bethlehem’s historical appeal. They worry that development in their downtown will shred the fabric of the community they love. And that, once it’s gone, it cannot be regained.
