Mechanicsville is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlanta and has a rich history that stretches from its 19th-century inception to recent pop culture references, especially in hip-hop. Mechanicsville is less than 10 minutes away from the historic Atlanta University Center, which houses Morehouse College, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. received his bachelor’s degree. Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College are a part of the AUC as well. Georgia State University is also convenient to Mechanicsville, making this neighborhood a great choice for students looking for affordable off-campus housing. Along with being home to the AUC, Mechanicsville is also best known for being the location for the movie ATL, a coming-of-age film featuring one of Atlanta’s biggest rappers, T.I. Today, Mechanicsville is a community undergoing revitalization lined with occasional cobbled brick roads and filled with turn-of-the-century homes and renovated apartment complexes.
