Elko is a true desert town plopped down in northeast Nevada. It sits on Interstate 80 and acts as a traveler’s rest stop between Reno and Salt Lake City. Gold mining is a huge part of the city’s economy, as is ranching and tourism. Hundreds of miles separate Elko from other big cities, which is why it has been nicknamed “The Heart of Northeast Nevada.”
Culture and heritage has been celebrated in Elko for many years. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering brings in local cowboys who share their life on the ranch in poems. Elko’s National Basque Festival has been celebrating Basque culture since 1964.
