About This Property
"Dr. William Brownell came to Utica to practice medicine in 1852. He was a typical country practitioner of the period - robust of body, with a rugged exterior and somewhat taciturn. He was considered an honest, conscientious, charitable, patriotic citizen - a physician devoted to his calling. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1852 and married Jane Scudder in 1856. They had three children: Lizzie, William Jr. and Kate. He served as postmaster at Utica from 1854 to 1856, served in the state legislature in 1856 and was re-elected to 1860. He took a great interest in educational matters and served 16 years on the school board, 10 years as president. He enlisted as surgeon of the Second Michigan Cavalry in 1861 and served three years. He built a brick home, which still stands on the northwest corner of Cass and Hahn." -Excerpt from the "Utica History Book" available for sale at the City Clerk. This is the home that Dr. Brownell Built. There are three units here and one of them recently became available after 20 years occupancy! This little community believes in being respectful, courteous and polite neighbors. They feel it takes everyone's part to make a space feel like home. They also believe this house is truly a piece of history that must be preserved. We do this by bringing each other's trash cans in (for example) and generally have each other's backs. I invite my tenants over if I have an event planned! We also take care of the property as it's almost 200 years old and beautifully built and maintained. If you believe in being a good neighbor, the unit available is truly unique. The building is the oldest residence in Utica. It was built by Dr. Brownell (the street behind Cass is named after him) in 1853. Dr. Brownell was the postmaster and president of the school board, surgeon, and served in the Legislative branch of the US. Inside the unit is exposed brick, knotty pine walls, a loft area, a balcony and original cabinets and molding from 1853! This is a unit that you have to FEEL, rather than one you can see in pictures. This is an upstairs apartment in a 3 unit building. Please do not knock on doors. Call to book appointment only, do not disturb current tenants. Utica is a small suburban city located about 25 miles north of Detroit. Primarily a residential community, the landscape is largely filled by quiet neighborhood streets lined with low-rise apartments, townhouses, and single-family homes.
Lakeside Mall anchors a large cluster of shopping centers on the east side, while a small but vibrant Downtown district runs along Auburn Road on the west side; this is where youāll find local favorites like the legendary Shamrock Irish Pub, a landmark in the community since 1935.
Living in Utica offers ample opportunities to spend time outdoors: River Bends Park sits on the north side of town, with the sprawling Stony Creek Metropark just a few minutes farther up the road. Boasting some of the best schools in the state, Utica has become a popular home for families.
