Resembling a Norman Rockwell painting, Downtown New Bern is beautiful -- the old-world architecture nestled in the trees, the boutiques and restaurants along shady streets, and the river views combine to make this North Carolina location a hidden gem. The city's history is long and fascinating -- Pepsi Cola was invented here in 1893, and in 1862 a Civil War battle, Battle of New Bern, was fought here. New Bern was first settled in 1710 and it is home to four historic districts.
