Neighborhood - Garment District
Less than a square mile in size, the Garment District took on the role of the center of the fabric industry, not only for New York City, but also for the entire nation in the early days of the United States. The core of the fashion industry, this small patch of land has become a mecca for designers, models and fashion talent. Centrally located on Manhattan Island and nestled between the Jacob Javits Center on the west side and the Empire State Building on the east, the Garment District itself and the majority of its individual buildings and businesses are dedicated to fashion in one way or another. Though the area no longer manufactures the vast swaths of textiles it once did, it remains the fashion capital for the nation. No other city within the United States can compare to the sheer concentration of fashion-related businesses in this one tiny neighborhood.
