About This Property
We have a cozy two bedroom, one bathroom, unfurnished apartment for rent on the second floor of our house at the back of Palolo. It’s approximately 700 sq. ft. inside, as well as a small lanai leading off of the separate entrance. There’s a big(ish) back yard for al fresco dining/work/relaxing/gardening, should you be inclined to any of those things, and we also have a charcoal grill that we’d be happy to share. The unit comes with its own washer and dryer, and one covered parking spot. Utilities are not included in the rent, and they run about $55 electric/$60 water per month depending on usage; we do have a solar water heater to help keep costs down. Pets are welcome as long as they are compatible with our two outdoor cats. (Larger dogs are probably not going to work in this space, or dogs that bark when alone. Very willing to discuss the specifics of your situation with you, though.) Our house is across the street from the 9S Bus stop, which connects with the buses running on Wai‘alae and the UH shuttle. The neighborhood is quiet, cool (or at least more so), and often rainy. The Palolo pool is very close, and Kaimana and Kahala beaches are a 15 minute drive away. This location is especially convenient for commuting to UH, Chaminade, Kaimuki, and the rest of East Honolulu. We both work at home, so reasonably quiet during work hours (~8AM-5PM, M-F) is important. That said, we have an enthusiastic and inquisitive three year old, so we’re understanding about the need to have flexible standards. Noise on our end is likely to be morning/evening, again three-year-old-related. We think good boundaries come from effective communication, and we try hard to be unobtrusive, as well as friendly and accommodating. We are pretty active in the yard, though, so we’re not invisible, and there will be some associated noise/activity. Part of that involves creating more privacy for the upstairs unit by planting trees; the ongoing maintenance of the yard will mostly happen on weekends. Tenants are absolutely welcome to share fruit and garden produce, or do their own gardening. There is a large and productive avocado tree, for example. We compost and encourage tenants to do so as well. Since we have lived in the house, the upstairs unit has housed families with small children and two young professional flatmates. The space can work for a variety of set-ups. We’re not looking for anyone in particular aside from having shared expectations about noise; our small child will want to become your best friend so a sense of humor is useful. For those with small children, we’d be happy to trade babysitting occasionally. We’re looking for a 6 mo commitment, and then month-to-month.
