Neighborhood - Avalon-Bellevue-Ben Avon
Nestled along the Ohio River and known as the “tri borough communities,” Avalon, Ben Avon and Bellevue sit in Allegheny County, just north of downtown Pittsburgh. Although the three areas share a zip code, and Avalon and Bellevue share a school district, each of the three boroughs have independent governments and municipal services. In 2009, the boroughs adopted a joint zoning ordinance designed to regulate land use in all three municipalities.
Ben Avon, the smallest of the three boroughs and once a summer retreat for leaders of industry, has a population of almost 1,800 residents, as of 2015. This picturesque town’s name translates to “hill by the river” in Scottish Gaelic. Avalon, a mostly residential community, houses the Greenstone United Methodist Church, built in 1906, and was awarded a plaque by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. French for “beautiful view,” the quaint borough of Bellevue has a wide variety of small businesses from coffee houses to yoga studies.
