Neighborhood - Powder House

Picture of Powder House Somerville

Powder House

Known to some as Powder House Square or Powder House Circle, the Powder House neighborhood sits within Somerville, which is about 5 miles from Boston.

Located just a stones throw away from the neighborhood's northern border sits Tufts University's primary campus. Many students and neighborhood residents visit Nathan Tufts Park, which sits inside neighborhood's northern border. Powder House Neighborhood derives its name from an 18th-century powder house, in which gunpowder was stored.

The neighborhood is also defined by its traffic circle, which contains an island park with benches, pathways and landscaped shrubbery. While it is largely a residential area, it is home to a number of restaurants and several medical and dental clinics, all of which residents visit and use regularly.
