City - Boston
Victorian homes perched along sidewalks that frame narrow streets flanked with trees, a historic downtown shopping district, and gorgeous parks help define West Roxbury. This Boston neighborhood is on the southwest side of Downtown. Dating back to 1630, West Roxbury began as a farming area and was part of Roxbury. During the 1840s, a utopian experiment was set up in West Roxbury called Brook Farm. This communal society was frequently visited by celebrities like author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who wrote a book about his stay in the community. By 1944, the utopian experiment was over. In 1851, West Roxbury became its own town -- but not for long. Boston annexed the town in 1874.
West Roxbury's long and fascinating history is evident in its architecture and its historic sites. Brook Farm's original 179 acres in now a National Historic Landmark and an ideal hiking and picnicking spot.
