About This Property
Lovingly cared for home in Staunton, Virginia, (the Queen City of the Shenandoah Valley, with five national historic districts), can be rented fully furnished, partially furnished or unfurnished. The house is located within walking distance to downtown in a beautiful neighborhood, close to the public library and Gypsy Hill Park. There is a large parking area which can hold multiple large vehicles, and the house is on a corner lot with over three-quarters of an acre and wonderful spaces for enjoying the outdoors. The eat-in-kitchen has lots of counter space and generous cabinet/storage space. The kitchen opens to the formal dining room and both connect with the very large living room where there is a unique, hand-crafted stone fireplace with gas logs. Also accessed through the dining room is the family room with its own entrance via the side porch. The front door opens into a foyer which connects to the living room. One of the two main bedrooms is downstairs, with a short hall connecting it to a large, full bathroom with a double vanity and huge linen closet; the bathroom has another entrance which opens into the main living area of the house. The hallway also connects to a small bedroom which works well as a nursery or bedroom for young children, or it could serve as a home office. A large walk in closet is accessed via the hallway connecting these rooms. The spacious downstairs bedroom also has its’ own closet. Upstairs there is a third bedroom with two closets and a second bathroom next to it, accessed via the upper hall. The entrance to the walk-in attic is located in this hallway. Either this upper bedroom, or the larger of the downstairs bedrooms, could serve as the primary bedroom. The family room has also been used as a fourth bedroom and a playroom, depending on the occupants’ needs. Now consisting of 9 rooms, most of ample size, the original four room house was built over a 100 years ago by Mennonite farmers, a daughter of the local Clem family and her husband. Since then, the house has had only several owners. The living room, and second level were added in the 1930s, and the eat-in kitchen and laundry room were added in 2007 when the house was completely modernized and many renovations/restorations were completed. The walls of the house are thick - very solid and there is a cellar carved out around the giant boulders that provide the most solid possible foundation beneath the house, which along with new furnace and AC system and the storm windows throughout (with the exception of a few of the original lead glass windows), make it fuel efficient in all seasons. The home is is well crafted and has withstood the test of time. It has never flooded, and it’s quality construction and location at one of the highest elevations within the city limits has ensured there has never been mold in the house. There are beautiful, original hardwood floors throughout, with tile floors in the kitchen and bathrooms. Architectural details such as arched doorways and built-ins, and the ample natural light from the many windows and almost 360° of clear views, set this house apart from most others that are similarly modernized and open. The property sits atop a large hill which looks out at the Alleghany mountains to the west, with views of Elliott’s Knob, and from the side yard to the northeast, one can see the Blue-Ridge Mountains rising in the distance. Mature trees and landscape plantings create a park-like atmosphere outdoors, which can be enjoyed from both the covered side porch with swing and the back deck which is 3/4ths covered. Pets will be allowed with local pet license, description, owner approval (for consideration of safety of home and neighbors), and a $250 pet deposit per pet. Large dogs may be subject to breed restrictions. Any pets that exceed two in number are subject to home owner’s approval. Lawn care (and snow removal as accessible by the plow) can be provided, or a lawn mower is available and residents can receive a rent reduction for providing mowing and/or snow removal themselves. Owners will need to access the property a few times a year for more extensive landscape maintenance. Renter’s insurance required. Shorter than one year lease considered for a visiting professor at one of local universities. (Renting the home completely unfurnished could slightly delay date of first availability for move in, as we will need time to move everything out.) Showings by appointment only. Best way to schedule is to text the owner, Ruth, at .
