Neighborhood - Lookout Mountain Reserve Area
Lookout Mountain Reserve Area
The North Mountain neighborhood sits about 15 miles due north of downtown Phoenix and straddles Interstate 17 just south of Bell Road. Encompassing the unincorporated neighborhood of Moon Valley, this area contains three pieces of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve: North Mountain, Shaw Butte and Lookout Mountain.
The area hosts a number of single family homes and apartments, a large mall, assorted office complexes, hotels, and restaurants. Several technical colleges call this area home, as does the West Campus of Arizona State University. As a victim of urban sprawl, this neighborhood is undergoing a period of redevelopment to recover from the loss of businesses to newer home developments on the outskirts of Phoenix.
A popular draw that remains a constant since 1956, Turf Paradise makes its home here. This horse-racing facility takes advantage of the Phoenix weather to host one of the longest thoroughbred racing schedules in the country.
