Neighborhood - Uptown New Orleans
When residents refer to "Uptown," they are usually talking about a large area "up" the Mississippi River from the rest of New Orleans. The area starts at a large bend in the Mississippi River and includes the neighborhoods of Riverside, Black Pearl, Carrollton, and Broadmoor. The actual Uptown New Orleans Historic District is south of the Freret neighborhood, extending south to Magazine Street and between Jefferson Avenue and Napoleon Avenue.
With beautiful 19th-century homes and a fascinating collection of locally-owned shops, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes, Uptown is more like a self-contained village than a neighborhood. It is home to Tulane University and Loyola University, as well as the vast Audubon Park. Uptown is one of the oldest sections of New Orleans, with the land granted to Governor Jean Baptiste LeMoyne in 1719.
The mansions along St. Charles Avenue and the sculpted live oak trees help make this one of the most spectacular drives in the country.
