West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

Property Ratings at 17 South Apartments
This place is not worth living at all!!! Please take your money elsewhere. The buildings are disgusting, the buildings are supposed to be security entrance but people find ways to by pass it. I put in several request for my ac/heat which keeps on kicking out and nothing ever got done about it. The trash is constantly piled up near the compactor, people just let their animals use the bathroom all over the community and don’t pick up after themselves. This place is a rip off & disgusting
Please DO NOT live here. Management is horrible, all the buildings are infested with cockroaches, and there’s trash everywhere. My kitchen has been infested with cockroaches since I moved in. They were everywhere, it was so disgusting. I was spraying every surface with roach killing and prevention spray and more and more kept popping up every day. The office refused to schedule an emergency exterminator, and ignored my emails. After over a week, the regular pest control apparently showed up but didn’t actually treat anything and the kitchen was still infested. After I sent notice to terminate my lease, management claimed they would send another pest control vendor to deal with the situation, but never did. I’d assume my whole building (probably all the buildings) are infested since my neighbors are all having similar problems. Beware of the many hidden fees. Utilities such as internet are NOT included. They don’t tell you about the $200 a month utility charge, in addition to the water/electric bill. $60 for internet + $60 to “rent” an in-unit washer-dryer, and a valet trash service that you can’t opt out of. The hallways and elevators are so dirty, with trash and cigarette butts in there constantly. The hallways are over-perfumed to mask the smell of garbage since people just leave their trash in the hallway for days. There was a wasp nest growing on my balcony for over a month before they finally had an exterminator come out. I spoke to the front office multiple times before anything was done. They kept saying they’ll add me to the pest control “list” but never actually did. When pest control finally did show up, he didn’t spray or remove the nest. The manager finally came out to get rid of it himself after a few weeks. The package room is a disaster with packages thrown in the middle of the room, no notification it’s arrived. The people that work here and run this place don’t actually care about you or your living conditions at all. They claim to be cheaper than living on any of the islands or downtown but when you add in all the hidden fees, it’s honestly more expensive than most places. This is absolutely not luxury living and not worth the costs.
We love living here! We have seen some change in management but the new team is really amazing! We had an issue with billing that was resolved same day and we were happy with how it was handled! The apartments themselves are beautiful and we love the pool!
You do NOT want to live here! You would be better off paying more money somewhere else. Here you are definitely getting what you pay for which is poor living conditions and bad customer service. There has been an alarm going off in our building for 2 full days now. When I called management the first day, I was told it would be fixed the next morning. That night I had to wake up every 3 hours to go in the hall to silence it. The company supposedly came to fix it today, but the alarm started going off again after they left. I contacted management several times after it started up again. Initially they told me that they would take care of it and that maintenance would be coming by to shut the alarm off overnight. I called maintenance to have them come to shut it off and when they came 2 hours later they told me that they would not be coming at all overnight. I asked for management to contact me and got no response. Of course they will lie and tell me one thing during business hours and then tell me another thing once they close and I can’t contact them anymore. They do not care about their tenants here at all. On top of that, the buildings are infested with roaches. We have even sprayed outside the building ourselves and it hasn’t helped at all. We kill at least one in our apartment every day, sometimes more. We also haven’t had a properly working dishwasher since we moved in. Out dishes were coming out with an unknown substance on them and there was dirty water at the bottom of the dishwasher. We called maintenance and he told us there was nothing he could do and that it was normal. We have been doing our dishes by hand since we moved in.
We just love our new apartment! Not many apartments feel like home to me but this one definitely makes you feel differently.

Looks like a magazine worthy apartment... until you actually move in. We moved into a brand new apartment and the dishwasher didn't work, maintenance tried to blame it on me, maintenance workers will just walk into your apartment with no notice. Office staff is unhelpful and apathetic to any problem you have, they also encourage tenants to violate your privacy and take pictures of other tenants for money off rent. Cracks in the walls and mold in the hallways and apartments, which the staff wouldn't do anything about. Honestly there is way to much to list but, if you value your privacy or at least your dignity to live in a descent apartment then do not move here.
