Neighborhood - Travis Heights
Greater South River City is a City of Austin Combined Planning Area made up of South River City, or Travis Heights, with the St. Edward's neighborhood located directly to the south. South River City developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Austin's first planned urban community south of the Colorado River.
The concrete Congress Avenue Bridge was completed in 1910, which allowed for a neighborhood boom in the 1920s and 1930s, and led to the eventual development of Greater South River City as the availability of transportation to downtown Austin improved. Initiated in 2003, the plan for Greater South River City was adopted as part of the Austin Tomorrow Comprehensive Plan in 2005.
