For those who appreciate the outdoors, Essex Junction is directly west of Mount Mansfield State Forest, a 44,444-acre mountainous park, the centerpiece of which, Mount Mansfield, is the highest peak in Vermont. The mountain is one of only three in the nation where the alpine tundra survived the ice age.
