About The Newport

In 1897, at nine stories, The Newport was one of Philadelphia's earliest high-rises. Today, it is a boutique apartment building of 46 delightful units. The moderate size provides a more personal and inviting atmosphere than that of larger complexes, yet with all the amenities. The Newport is a historic building in the Rittenhouse-Fitler Historic District.

In May 2009 The Newport was presented with a Historic Achievement Award from The Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia for excellence in the restoration of the property.

The Newport is in a residential area in the very heart of center city Philadelphia, at the edge of the commercial district. Located at the corner of Sixteenth and Spruce Streets, the location is outstanding. All the reasons center city people like to live in center city apply particularly well here since shopping, cultural centers, offices, transportation, and an abundance of gourmet restaurants are literally steps away. And the recent opening of the Kimmel Center For The Performing Arts, just one block away, further enhanced an already superior location. In the booming Philadelphia area, there have been a number of high-priced condominium buildings completed within the past few years, but few, if any, have a location equal to that of The Newport.

The Newport has the thorough charm of an earlier age. It was erected in the Victorian age with architectural details not seen in later buildings. The copper-clad bay-windows, or oriels, the arched stained-glass windows, the elliptical windows, the copper cornices at the fourth and at the eighth floors, the base of large brownstone, the impressive arched entrances, the high ceilings, the marble stair with brass handrail, etc., all contribute to the charm and warmth of "a great place to come home to".
