About Breakers Apartments

The Breakers Apartments and Edgewater Park Manor are located in a tree-shaded park setting at the edge of Cleveland's West Shoreway. Situated on beautiful Lake Avenue, immediately east of West Boulevard, the buildings have an unobstructed view of Edgewater Park, with a bathing beach, a picnic pavillion, jogging trails, and water sports facilities just a 3-minute walk to the north.

Designed by the renowned architect Alfred W. Harris, the buildings were constructed about 1920, when timeless hand craftsmanship was at its height, as European artisans brought with them the talents of their forebears. As evidence, you will notice beautiful hand-carved woods, sculpted ornamental plaster mouldings, classic gargoyles, and scrolled masonry trim rarely found in 20th century structures.

Major Harris served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War I. While stationed in Europe, he was exposed to English and French architecture, which influenced his later work. He believed that English architecture should be showcased in this country, most effectively in large apartment complexes. The Breakers and Edgewater Park Manor manifest this rich style.

Over the years, these architectural treasure-troves have been occupied by some of Cleveland's famous and storied heroes--judges, sportsmen, educators, and civil servants like Elliot Ness, the renowned policeman, law director, and finally, the ultimate Untouchable.

The two contiguous buildings contain a total of 76 suites, of which 36 are located in the Breakers, and 40 in Edgewater Park Manor. Many suites have been renovated and enjoy beautiful modern kitchens with built-in dishwashers and microwaves, while others retain their vintage design. Kitchens vary based on availability. Each building is equipped with an elevator, a large laundry room, and a commodious lobby area. A private garden court is situated between the two buildings.
