Neighborhood

West Louisville, which includes the historic neighborhoods of Portland and Shawnee, sits around 3 miles northwest of downtown. The Portland neighborhood delights residents with its historic buildings, including many mansions built in the pre-civil war era during Portland's early growth as an economic hub on the Ohio River. Later developments added numerous shotgun style homes to the mix of remaining antebellum structures, creating unique residential neighborhoods.

Shawnee was developed later than Portland due to its location further west. The construction of Shawnee Park in the late nineteenth century led to an increased demand for development around the park. Louisvillians wanted the opportunity to live right next to the large municipal park, so residential streets sprung up in the areas around it, giving the neighborhood many structures from the turn-of-the-century.
