Neighborhood

Picture of Jamaica Hills Jamaica

Jamaica Hills

Once there were mansions in Jamaica Hills. Now, detached homes are de rigueur. Most homes in Queens follow this pattern and Jamaica Hills is no exception. Residents do not mind. In fact, this neighborhood, a large melting pot of diverse cultures, rejoices that they can call it their own.

Like Jamaica Estates to the east, the roads are long and winding until you reach Hillside Avenue, where busy Jamaica sits. Many different races of people live here now. In general, long-time residents embrace the change but they do not care for the change to housing landscape. Multi-family homes stand in the place of traditional detached homes. These large homes meet the needs of immigrants who want to bring extended family member along with them to America. Long-term residents balk at zoning laws that change the Jamaica Hills panorama.

Along with immigrants, college students from St. John’s University make a mark on the community.
