Picture of West End Atlanta

West End

Atlanta's West End, named for the London theater district, is both historic and innovative. The neighborhood features a large number of buildings renovated to preserve their historic architecture as well as contemporary single-family homes and lofts.

As home to several black colleges, the West End - located 10 minutes and just under 3 miles from downtown Atlanta - plays host to a significant number of students. The neighborhood has enjoyed some Hollywood spotlight as well; the Tyler Perry play "Madea Goes to Jail," which spurred a film adaptation, mentions the West End several times.

Many say the West End, with its architecture ranging from Colonial Revival to Folk Victorian, typifies urban Atlanta during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is home to the home of Joel Chandler Harris, who authored the Uncle Remus books, as well as other landmarks, including the Hammonds House Museum of African American fine art and the Shrine of the Black Madonna cultural center.
