Outer North Kalamazoo County

North Kalamazoo county, in southwestern Michigan, is mostly rural farmland inhabited by the residents of Kalamazoo Charter Township, unincorporated Comstock Northwest and the Village of Richland. The county seat, Kalamazoo, is located slightly to the south. The county is small, and the city center can be reached in a few minutes.

The City of Kalamazoo, with the Kalamazoo river running through its center, is the major city; it is home to Western Michigan University and many historical sites, including the original Gibson guitar factory.

The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo supports many arts organizations, individual artists and art lovers, giving the community a rich cultural heritage. From concerts in the park to theater, galleries and public art, residents and visitors always find something to do in Kalamazoo.

The area is known for the phrase “from Timbuktu to Kalamazoo,” plus the 1942 hit “I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo,” leading some to believe the town is fictional.
