Finding Apartments for Rent in Wausau, WI

While there is a variety of apartments, duplexes and even houses to rent in Wausau's metropolitan area, the early bird catches the worm. Expect that most landlords allow moving only from spring to fall, so you may want to sign a shorter or longer lease. Wausau's rent rates are often more affordable than those in larger cities, which makes it easier to rent if you have no roommates or family.

    Top Neighborhoods in Wausau, WI

While Wausau itself has a population of about 40,000 people, the number of residents and square miles grows considerably when you add in suburbs, which include Rothschild, Schofield/Weston, Ringle, Kronenwetter, Rib Mountain and other surrounding towns. The combined police force in Schofield, Weston and Rothschild makes it one of the safest places to live, and you'll find newer houses in Weston. More expensive homes and rentals can be found along the Eau Claire River in Weston while you'll pay a pretty penny to rent downtown condos.

However, there is a variety of architecture and prices available if you expand your search. There are several housing communities around Wausau West High that are newer and quiet.Much of Rib Mountain is residential as well.

Converted warehouses downtown offer unique apartments that are within walking distance to nearly everything. Several larger apartment complexes have popped up near Northcentral Technical College on the city's northwest side, and you may want to live near Stewart Ave if you're attending UWMC.

    Cultural Attractions in Wausau, WI

Wausau has recently been named one of the state's Bird Cities, and a renewed effort to add bike lanes in addition to the many walking paths enable residents to get in touch with nature. There are many parks, several gardens and multiple farmer's markets that occur during the week. The renovated 400 Block hosts Chalkfest every year in addition to concerts on the square during the warmer months. Events such as Rib Fest, the Balloon Rally and Summer Kickoff make Wausau a destination for people who live in Central Wisconsin.

The city has a renewed focus on downtown and the river district, which includes small shops owned by local residents in addition to a mall. The city also hosts an annually July 4th carnival and the larger Wisconsin Valley Fair, which brings national acts to the stage at Marathon Park. Some might be surprise to learn about Wausau's interest in art, including the Center for Visual Arts and the Grand Theater, both of which are right downtown.

    Nightlife in Wausau, WI

In true Wisconsin tradition, nightlife focuses on local watering holes where you can enjoy a drink or a show with your friends or people who are yet to become friends. There are several establishments downtown, including Malarkey's and Intermission, the latter two which are known for live music and open mic nights. They're great venues to support local talent or to get your name out there. Enjoy a raucous drag show at Oz Night Club, a bar that packs more fun than you can imagine.

If you venture just outside of town, you can enjoy live rock or country music at the Q & Z Expo Center in Ringle. Other popular nighttime activities include bowling at once of several bowling alleys and there are also micro-breweries right in town where you can enjoy the finest ales Wisconsin has to offer.

    Dining in Wausau, WI

You'll find many national chains in Wausau in addition to smaller restaurants that are stapes in the community. Stop by The Mint downtown for burgers and shakes and to check out the signature left by B.B. King. If you're in a hurry, the mall offers everyone's favorite, bourbon chicken, at a Mongolian restaurant. With a large Southeast Asian population, there are plenty of Chinese, sushi and Vietnamese restaurants. Chang Garden offers upscale dining while you can stuff yourself at any number of buffets.

Don't be afraid to try out some of those hole-in-the-wall types. Some of the best burgers come from bars like B & R or Hiawatha; although, you'll get an impressive spread from Milwaukee Burger. If you want something more substantial, sink your teeth into a steak in downtown's City Grill, which is below the Jefferson St. Inn.

Hometown favorites such as Iozzos and Carmelos cater to you Italian lovers, too. Angelo's on 6th Street makes some of the best pizza around, and you'll get a unique dining experience at Red Eye Brewery, which is a micro-brewery with modern food.
