This economically diverse area features a pleasing mix of both residential and commercial buildings. Originally, development on the area started in 1890 with the Ghent Historic District gaining notoriety with its registration with the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
While much of the area was developed in a typical grid pattern, an exception was made in order to accommodate Smith Creek and an inlet of the Elizabeth River that is Y-shaped. Mowbray Arch was the name given to this street that also includes a semicircle shoreline. It soon became a favorite place onto which to build stately homes that take advantage of the area's waterfront views. Today, Ghent features a vibrant mix of new condominiums and large apartment buildings that were built at the turn of the century interspersed with cozy bungalows nestled in neat rows.

Covered picnic shelters beckon families and others to gather while two basketball courts - one for adults, the other for youth - encourage pick-up games. A variety of playground equipment, as well as a 'splash pad' with a fountain area and water jets, provide children with plenty of opportunities for fun while a running and walking trail, complete with eight wellness stations, surrounds the park so everyone can stay healthy.
