Visual Properties, L.L.C., a Chicagoland apartment locator service founded in 1992, launched the Apartments Plus Web site in January 1997 to support its local retail apartment locator business. By April 1997, the site included national listings and in December 1997, Classified Ventures acquired ApartmentsPlus as its online apartment advertising solution for newspapers nationwide. ApartmentsPlus was re-launched as Apartments.com in March 1998 and is focused solely online.


1992:   Visual Properties founded
1993- 1996:   Visual Properties develops its proprietary computer system known as OASIS (Online Apartment Search and Information System), and operates three retail offices in the Chicago area
Jan 97:   After refining its technology for four years with 20,000 Chicagoland renters, Visual Properties launches the ApartmentsPlus Web site as a local online extension of its retail services
Apr 97:   ApartmentsPlus site goes national
Jun 97:    ApartmentsPlus introduces Video Walk-Around, enabling apartment hunters to take a virtual tour by pointing and clicking a mouse
Jun 97:    ApartmentsPlus partners with Classifieds2000, the Internet�s top-rated classifieds service, to distribute its content on highly trafficked Web sites
Sep 97:    ApartmentsPlus launches an exclusive apartment area in America Online�s Real Estate Channel
Dec 97:   ApartmentsPlus is selected by AT&T WorldNet, the nation�s leading direct Internet access service, to be the sole content provider for its Real Estate area
Dec 17, 97:   The Times Mirror Company, Tribune Company and The Washington Post Company announce the creation of Classified Ventures, a partnership to help newspapers expand their position, using Internet technologies, as the nation's leading suppliers of classified advertising
Jan 15, 98:   CV acquires Visual Properties and its ApartmentsPlus Web site. ApartmentsPlus is selected to be the online apartment advertising solution for newspaper affiliates across the country
Mar 12, 98:   ApartmentsPlus changes its name to Apartments.com and its Internet address to www.apartments.com
May 98:    Apartments.com launches on the Web site of its first affiliate, The Washington Post
May 7, 98:   Knight Ridder joins CV
