CHICAGO (August, 17, 2009) – Although summer may be coming to an end, the national “Apartments.com Roommate of the Year Contest” is heating up as the search for America’s best roommate continues. Apartments.com today unveiled the five fabulous roommates who will compete for the ultimate bailout plan of free rent for one year, up to $12,000, plus $10,000 in cash and the coveted title of “Roommate of the Year.” After receiving online video submissions from renters around the country, five talented and lucky roomies were chosen through a combination of votes cast by America and the Apartments.com judging panel. All videos were judged with equal weight on originality and creativity, overall “wow” factor, persuasive argument and style and production.

All the remaining roomies are guaranteed to walk away with at least $500, but the grand prize—free rent for a year, up to $12,000, plus $10,000 in cash—is what they’re ultimately after, and only one person will be crowned the first-ever Apartments.com “Roommate of the Year.” The grand prize winner will be announced before October 1, 2009.
“With a $22,000 grand prize at stake, all our finalists went out and drummed up support for their video using every tool from distributing flyers around their college campus to highly sophisticated social media campaigns. It was really something to experience,” Kotula continues.
“We were thrilled by the creativity, time and energy all our finalists put into their video submissions and promoting themselves during the voting stage of our contest. There are certainly a lot of great roommates out there!”

The Purr-fect Pet Category—This roomie makes their four-legged cohabiters feel right at home by being a best roommate—and friend—to their pet. Jen Cady of Los Angeles submitted the winning video entry in The Purr-fect Pet category, designed to illustrate what makes a renter the best roommate to their pet(s). This “poignant” love story between a woman and her cat trying to make it in L.A. tugs at the heartstrings with ever-so-subtle humor. Living together while not always in luxury, at least always in harmony, this moving story gives you a glimpse into the daily life of two inseparable friends. Jen found Harvey and the rest is history - complete with slow-motion bicycle rides!

The Coolest Crib Category—This roomie enjoys the high life and comes with a roommate-ready apartment furnished with the coolest stuff.
“No More Nightmares”The Coolest Crib category is for the roomie with creature comforts that others crave, and Martin Rosa of Canal Winchester, OH, knows his nightmares about bad apartments are over with his new decked-out pad. Martin takes us on a tour of his apartment, complete with flat screen TV, stereo system and even a two-car garage to house his rides. You’ll have a hard time finding another apartment as nice as this one, high ceilings and a fully-loaded kitchen are tough to beat!

The Individualist Category—This roomie is the all-around “great guy or gal” who can squeeze every ounce of creativity and originality into an entry to make it stand out from the rest.
“Roommate of the Year Official Music Video” This original song, "Roommate of the Year" was written, produced, and directed by Kevin Adams of Columbus, OH. Entered in The Individualist category, Kevin’s video shows how ridiculously inept his past roommates were, and how he’s even willing to fight off sharks to make his new roommate happy. With all of the cleaning and bill-paying Kevin has to do, it’s hard to believe he found time to write this catchy song and claim the winning video entry in his category! |
