    • Finding Apartments in Las Cruces, NM

Las Cruces ranks in the top 300 most populated cities in the US, and yet, it never quite feels crowded. Spreading over 76 square miles, Las Cruces has the population size of a big city, but not the population density. There's room to breathe here, and that allows Las Cruces to feel like a small town even as it offers all the conveniences of a big city.

Due to the more spread-out nature of Las Cruces, it's not hard to find a place to rent. Finding a place in a neighborhood where you want to live can be a little trickier and may require some patience.

Top Neighborhoods in Las Cruces, NM

The great thing about New Mexico is that even the good neighborhoods typically aren't that expensive when compared to the national average. The average income in New Mexico is a little lower than it is in the rest of the country, and the rents reflect that, so you don't need to worry that a nice suburban place or a spot in a good, artsy neighborhood is out of your price range. Boyd ranks as the safest neighborhood in Las Cruces, while City Center offers more people and more stuff to do.

      Weather in Las Cruces, NM

If you're going to live in New Mexico, you're going to need to get used to some fairly extreme weather. Some don't like it, others find it to be a part of New Mexico's charm. Even in the summer, it's not a bad idea to keep a coat in the car, and in the Winter, dressing in removable layers can be a lifesaver. Between 1981 and 2010, the record highs in Las Cruces reached around 110 with the record lows around -10. You get dry heats here, which are quite different from the humid heatwaves in Florida and other Southern states. The Southwest is a great region if you're open to weird weather, but admittedly it can be a bit much for some people.

      Shopping in Las Cruces, NM

Las Cruces is a part of the whole Route 66 culture that runs through New Mexico, so when you browse the Eastside, which is quickly becoming the commercial center for the city, expect to see a lot of fun, kitschy, touristy shops and diners where you can find memorabilia to that effect. The real attraction, when it comes to shopping in Las Cruces, is the Downtown Mall. This can be found on Main Street, where you'll see locals selling handmade art and crafts from serapes to ceramics, as well as Native American, Mexican and Southern style cooking.

Transportation Options in Las Cruces, NM

Las Cruces operates the RoadRUNNER transit, a small but effective system and a great way to get around town. The fleet consists of fourteen 35 foot wheelchair accessible buses that run all around town for a dollar a ride. There are nine routes total, but it does not run on Sundays, so owning a car, even if you've invested in a bus pass, isn't a bad idea. Once you get to the Eastside or Main Street, Las Cruces can be surprisingly walkable, but getting there can be a pain if you don't have a set of wheels, due to the spread-out nature of Las Cruces. Some people bicycle from neighborhood to neighborhood, but spreading over more than 70 square miles, that can be a bit impractical if you need to make a longer trip.

Las Cruces, like much of New Mexico is very spread out, yet very dense with culture and history. Amazing people, amazing sights and amazing history are waiting for you in Las Cruces.
