What do renters want? Apartments.com asked and is now sharing the results! Each month, Apartments.com surveys renters nationwide to find out what renters want and distributes the results to press outlets across the country. Take a look at the most recent survey results as follows.

August 2009: Renters Enjoy Their Apartment Amenities This Summer
Renters were cutting costs this summer by staying close to home. According to an Apartments.com national survey of more than 1,000 renters around the country, 55 percent of respondents said they were spending more time in their apartments this summer compared to previous years, citing economic factors as the primary reason they were traveling less. As a result of this new behavior, access to desirable apartment amenities and on-site community features became increasingly important to renters as they looked for ways to enjoy the summer without breaking the bank.

June 2009: Nearly Ninety Percent of Renters Are Pet Owners
Renters love pets and were doing their part to find a place to live that accommodates both them and their four-legged cohabitators. According to an Apartments.com survey of more than 1,000 renters around the country, nearly 90 percent of renters who responded said they had a pet. Of the renters surveyed that did not currently own a pet, more than half planned to become pet owners within the next year.

Pets were being made a priority by renters during their apartment search. More than 80 percent of respondents said a pet-friendly policy played a major role in where they chose to live and 30 percent sought out an apartment in close proximity to desirable pet amenities such as dog parks, walking trails and a veterinary office.

May 2009: Nearly Seventy-Five Percent of Renters Recycle and Conserve Energy
Renters were doing their part to save the environment. During a national survey, more than 65 percent of renters told Apartments.com that practicing an environmentally-friendly lifestyle was a high priority. To conserve energy, 52 percent of renters were turning off lights and computers when not in use, setting air conditioners and heaters on timers and using energy-efficient light bulbs. Twenty-two percent were recycling paper, plastics and electronics.

Those who were not actively seeking out ways to conserve and maintain the environment indicated the number one reason as not having access to an on-site recycling program at their apartment. As peak rental season ramped up around the country, renters were also going green during their apartment search.
