Finding Apartments for Rent in Sterling Heights, MI

Located on the western edge of Macomb County, MI, the city of Sterling Heights is the fourth largest city in the state, based on its population of approximately 130,000 people. Prior to the city's incorporation in the 1960s, Sterling Heights was a bustling center of agriculture, primarily selling rhubarb in the Detroit area.

Today, Sterling Heights is ranked as one of the top small cities in which to live and is also the sixth safest city in the United States. As such, there's quite a high demand for residential real estate; finding apartments for rent can be a challenge, especially during the busy moving months of June through August.

Top Neighborhoods in Sterling Heights, MI

Despite the city's relatively large size of about 36 square miles, Sterling Heights doesn't have many distinguished neighborhoods; much of the city is still quite rural, though the City Center neighborhood has more of a downtown feel along with some intriguing historical buildings.

Cultural Attractions in Sterling Heights, MI

Although Sterling Heights is still a relatively new city (as it wasn't officially incorporated until 1968), it still has quite a rich history. Specifically, the William Upton House, located in City Center (and mentioned above) is a must-see attraction whether you plan on visiting the area or even moving there.

Specifically, the William Upton house is the oldest building still standing in the city and was officially designated a historical site in the 1980s. What's so special about this little house? Well, William Upton was a driving force for the success of the area in the mid 1800s. Upton is believed to have been responsible for a great deal of the area's success in real estate, farming, and the mercantile industry. Today, the house serves as a commercial office building and holds the offices of many of the city's government and other officials.

Sterling Heights is known for its annual parades and street fairs, so if you end up moving here, you'll need to check some of them out for yourself. For example, every year near the end of July, the city holds a huge event known as Sterlingfest. This annual event consists of and art and music fair that's fun for people of all ages.

During Sterlingfest, you can participate in a 5K run, enjoy food from vendors all across the region, and browse/purchase one-of-a-kind artwork and home decor from local artists. Furthermore, if you're a fan of live music, you can't miss this event. Each day, they feature the best local musicians.

Transportation Options in Sterling Heights, MI

Due to the large size of the city, the majority of Sterling Heights' residents get around via personal vehicle. The main roads include state highway M-53 and M-59, both of which are major routes to other counties and major cities.

Furthermore, because Sterling Heights is relatively close to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, there are also a lot of taxi and car services that bring people from the city to the airport for either a flat rate or per-mile fee.

During the warmer months of the year, biking is also a viable option among those who like to get outdoors. Some areas of the city have bike lanes, especially near the City Center area where most of the businesses are. Still, the main mode of transportation is personal vehicle, and there isn't much of an established bus system for the city's residents.

    Weather in Sterling Heights, MI

One of the best aspects of living in Michigan--especially in a city like Sterling Heights--is that you get to experience all four climates in full swing throughout the year. Specifically, Sterling Heights is known for its beautiful autumns. However, if you're planning on moving here from a warmer climate, it may take some time for you to adjust.

Winters in Michigan are known to be harsh, especially in Macomb county. This is because of the high amounts of lake effect snow that this region is known to get. All cities located near large bodies of water are prone to this, so getting used to the frigid and snowy winters can sometimes be a challenge for those who are from warmer areas of the country.
