Finding an Apartment for Rent in Bowie, MD

Looking for an apartment in Bowie, MD? Not surprising. This town (pronounced "boo-wee") is a popular choice for a wide range of demographics thanks to its convenient location near Washington, DC and Baltimore, and residents get to experience everything each city has to offer (without having to deal with the high rent costs and overcrowding) plus all the great features of Bowie itself. Thankfully, you'll find that the amount of apartment complexes here has grown in recent years to answer the demand.

    Cultural Attractions in Bowie, MD

Bowie has a long and rich history, starting back in the early 1900s when it was founded as a small stop along the railroad into Southern Maryland. Today it is one of the biggest towns in the state and is home to numerous historical and cultural spots, like the National Capital Radio and Television Museum and of course, the Huntington Railroad Museum right in the heart of Old Town Bowie. If you want to see even more historic places, Annapolis is only about 25 minutes to the East. And of course, the nation's capital is always just minutes away to the West.

If museums and historic attractions aren't really you're thing, that's no problem at all. Allen Pond Park has plenty of things to do, complete with events at the park amphitheater, fields for all kinds of sports, fishing options, and more. The area itself is also full of more attractions, and Six Flags America is just a short, 20-minute drive to the South.

    Shopping in Bowie, MD

Bowie has long been home to a variety of stores, but most locals find that the Bowie Town Center suits all of their main shopping needs. There are actually over 70 stores in this shopping center alone, covering clothing, entertainment and electronics, houseware, and other retail areas. Smaller shopping centers can also be found down along Annapolis Road and Lanham Severn Road.

If you're looking for great holiday gifts or more unique purchases, Old Town Bowie (also called "Historic Bowie") has several great antique shops. Even if you aren't interested in buying antiques, the shops are just generally fun to walk around in, and the historic buildings they're in will give you an idea of how the town used to look many years ago and how far it has since come.

    Dining in Bowie, MD

The Bowie Town Center is known for having multiple restaurants to choose from (including chains like Panera Bread and Five Guys), but that certainly doesn't mean you can't venture elsewhere in town for a great bite to eat. Since the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean are close by, Bowie has several great seafood restaurants and fisheries. And since the area has developed into a cultural melting pot over the years, there are also a number of Asian food joints, Mexican restaurants, and even places with cuisines from around the U.S. itself. And when it comes to dessert, it doesn't get much better than places like the Simple Pleasures Ice Cafe in Old Town (homemade ice cream-- enough said).

    Nightlife in Bowie, MD

A lot of the local restaurants are open late, but there are also quite a few cocktail lounges and local bars, especially along Collington Avenue and Route 3. If you're in a younger age range, you'll also be happy to know that the closer you get to DC, the more bars and nightclubs there are that appeal to the under-40 crowd.

    Sports in Bowie, MD

While nearby Washington, DC and Baltimore are home to multiple professional sports teams, you don't need to go outside Bowie just to get a sports fix. The Bowie Baysox are the local minor league baseball team (affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles), and they play at Prince George's Stadium off of Crain Highway.

In the northern part of town is also Bowie State University, home to the Bulldogs athletic teams. The Bulldogs are Division II, but tickets are generally low cost and some games are entirely free. The University participates in the following sports: football, basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, bowling, track and field, and cross country.

    Transportation Options in Bowie, MD

There are direct roads connecting to both DC and Baltimore (though commuters should be forewarned that they do often get backed up during rush hour). If you want to save on gas money, however, you'll be pleased to know that Bowie is also well connected via public transit. The metrobus goes to all the main areas of town, and the nearest subway and train connections (the metro "Orange line" and Amtrak) are just over in New Carrollton to take you into DC.

As for airports, Baltimore-Washington International is about 25 minutes away by car, while Dulles International (over in Virginia) is about 40 minutes away. There are also several smaller, local airports sprinkled throughout the region.

    Weather in Bowie, MD

Being in the mid-Atlantic, Bowie does experience all four seasons. The summers can be very hot while the winters can be very cold and filled with snow (though many years are actually very mild). The good thing though is that this means plenty of outdoor activities throughout the year, such as day trips to the beach during the summer and ski trips in the Appalachians during the winter. Whatever season is your favorite, Bowie is there for you.
