Quick & Easy Energy Saving Tips
Many of you may have noticed that “going green” is a very hot topic right now. So how green are you?
As a landlord, it makes sense to make sure that your tenants are living in a comfortable and energy efficient rental. There are many benefits – the first being, saving money, increasing potential tenants’ interest in your property, and increasing your property’s sale price.
- Set the water heater thermostat to 120 degrees – for every degree it’s set back you’ll save a percent! Please note: do not set to less than 120 degrees; you’ll risk unhealthy bacterial growth.*
- Install water saving showerheads in the bathroom – contrary to popular belief these do not reduce water pressure; your renters will never know! A family of four, each taking a five-minute shower a day, can save $250 a year in water heating costs by switching to a low-flow showerhead.*
- Regularly check that all faucets and toilets are working properly in your rental unit(s). A running toilet or a dripping faucet may be a minor annoyance to a tenant, but the wasted water leads to higher water bills for you.
- Install aerators on all faucets – this helps to maximize water efficiency.
- Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs use 75 percent less energy than typical incandescents, and they last 10 times longer.*
