Hidden in the isolated Sangre De Cristo Range of south central Colorado lie a cluster of jagged alpine peaks known as the Crestone group. The Spanish Peaks of south central Colorado have long served as landmarks, guiding Native American tribes, the Conquistadors, gold seekers, and American settlers. Time and again surveyors tried to get to the top of the Sangre de Cristo range to establish boundary lines, but they always failed. They wrote words like "inaccessible" and "unsurveyable" on their maps across the face of Crestone Peak. On the afternoon of July 24th, 1916, Crestone Needle became the last-conquered 14,000 footer in the state.
