    • Finding Apartments for Rent in San Jose, CA

San Jose’s roots go back to 1777 when the town was christened “El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe” by its Spanish founders. In 1850, San Jose became the first capital of California. It remained an agricultural town for decades, experiencing a small urban growth spurt after World War II. Enter the silicon chip and San Jose was rechristened the “Capital of Silicon Valley.” Choose downtown locations such as S 1st St and E Santa Clara that have a youthful college vibe. Or, head to the outskirts to newer developments like English Town that offer a more suburban living experience.

Top Neighborhoods in San Jose, CA

Since San Jose is so spread out you may want to consider your transportation options when choosing a neighborhood. Anything in or around the downtown area, like the City Center, has bus and light rail service. This makes for an easy commute for workers in or near the center of San Jose. Most rental properties, particularly apartments, are closer to downtown. Some of the more exclusive neighborhoods, like Coyote on the southern edge, usually offer single family home rentals. Many of the outlying neighborhoods offer a rural lifestyle but have little public transit. Coyote is one of them, located 17 miles from downtown San Jose via Highway 101. City or country, it's your choice.

Cultural Attractions in San Jose, CA

Some of San Jose’s most popular attractions are seasonal. The city rarely sees temperatures close to freezing but each year Downtown Ice makes its appearance. Between November and January an ice rink is set up in the plaza next to the Fairmont Hotel. The circular rink is surrounded by palm trees and has two sections, one for beginning skaters and another for those more comfortable on the ice. Christmas in the Park turns the Plaza de Cesar Chavez into a winter wonderland each year, drawing visitors from all around the Bay Area. First rate museums include the San Jose Museum of Art, the Tech Museum of Innovation and the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, all in the downtown core. Guadalupe River Park runs right through the center of town and includes the Heritage Rose Garden, hiking trails and picnic areas. It stretches for three miles from Highway 880 in the north to Highway 280 on the southern end. Southeast of downtown is the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, another family favorite.

Shopping and Dining in San Jose, CA

San Jose is home to one of Northern California’s largest malls, Westridge Valley Fair. It houses more than 250 stores, a host of fast food and sit-down restaurants and has valet parking. South of downtown is the Eastridge Shopping Center, another shopping giant that has free Wi-Fi hot spots throughout the mall. Head north of downtown to Milpitas and you have the Great Mall, one of the largest indoor outlet malls in California. It also offers Wi-Fi hot spots, name brand stores, restaurants and a 20-Plex Century Theater.

Head to downtown San Jose for the Farmers Market every Friday from May through November. Local vendors sell everything from ethnic prepared foods to fresh produce and home made craft items. Also be sure to check out the weekend San Jose Flea Market, a fixture in the Berryessa neighborhood since 1960. Wear some comfortable walking shoes and pick up one of their shopping directories. You’ll need both. Downtown San Jose is home to some of the area’s most innovative restaurants. Dine on Spanish tapas at Picasso’s, sushi and sashimi at Fuji Sushi or authentic Mexican food at La Victoria Taqueria. All these restaurants are within one city block and are a small sample of what’s available.

      Sports in San Jose, CA

The San Jose Sharks brought hockey to town in 1991. It’s currently the only National Hockey League Team in the San Francisco Bay Area. Despite the tide of warm weather jokes, the players from the “Shark Tank” have made the finals every year within the last decade. Suitable for this Silicon Valley locale, the team skates onto the ice through the animated jaws of a 17-foot high shark head complete with flashing red eyes. The San Jose Earthquakes are the local soccer team. Games are held at Buck Shaw Stadium at Santa Clara University and at the Oakland Coliseum in the city of Oakland. The Quakes have a new stadium under construction that is expected to open for the 2015 season. The San Jose Giants, a farm team for the San Francisco Giants, plays at the San Jose Municipal Stadium. The ball park has a barbecue area along left field that fans are free to use.

      Transportation in San Jose, CA

Public transit is the preferred method of getting around downtown San Jose. Beyond that the city is spread out and ringed with several suburbs where driving is sometimes more practical. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, VTA for short, operates bus transit service as well as a light rail line. Passes allow you to use both systems. Both offer service to the Caltrain Station, located on the western edge of downtown. Amtrak and the Altamont Commuter Express also stop here. The bus system offers express service to the Bay Area Transit System, or BART, giving you access to the entire Bay Area. The Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport is roughly three miles from downtown.
