Let me just say, this was the worst experience I have ever had with an apartment complex. If I could give this place zero stars, I would.
We relocated across the country, from Boston to SD. Because it was such a big move, we had to do the majority of our planning online. From what we could tell online, we liked this place. It was simple, affordable, close to my girlfriend's new job, and seemed decent enough. More importantly, they had a 6 month lease option so that we could at least move to the area and then figure out where we wanted to go from there.
First, the application fee is $30 a person, with a $200 deposit. If they reject you, you get the $200 back. If you reject them, you lose it all. This wasn't really a problem, but I wanted to talk to someone to see if we would be approved since we had only two weeks to pack and move across the country before my girlfriend needed to start work. I spoke with Lisa, who is the Community Manager on the property. Lisa was very helpful - the only 1 bedroom available on the property would not be available until a week after we needed to move, but she was able to move it up so the unit would be ready on the April 13, a Saturday. We were hoping to be in the place a few days earlier. Through several conversations with Lisa, she said we could arrive and sign the lease on April 11, get the keys, so we would be all set to move in on April 12.
We arrived on April 11, after flying out of Boston to Arizona and driving to California, to find that Lisa had the day off. Another woman, Alicia, was there with our lease to sign. We sat down, and she informed us that we would be able to move in on April 13. Obviously, that is not where we left the conversation with Lisa, and we would not have driven 8 hours after a 6 hour flight if we could not have gotten the keys that day. Alicia seemed confused, and offered to call Lisa on her cell to see where the confusion had happened.
This is where it went all downhill. At this point, a woman who we found out later was the regional manager, come out of nowhere, told us point blank, "Lisa did not tell you that. You are wrong. You cannot move in early without paying for the two days. Here's what you are going to do - you are going to sign your lease today, you are going to move in on Saturday, and I am not going to talk to you about this again."
A few things about this. One, that is absolutely no way to talk to anyone. We were not yelling, or throwing a fit. We were simply pointing out that we had been told something different, and we were more than happy to wait until we had spoken to Lisa to figure out what was going on. Also, this woman was not involved in the conversation. She came in long enough to yell at us, call us liars (saying that we had not spoken to Lisa when I have emails and voicemails to the contrary) and essentially thieves implying that we were trying to get two days free, and then abruptly inform us what we were going to do and then walk away without ever giving us a chance to respond, ask a question, or figure out a compromise. We were under the impression our lease started on April 11; we would have been more than happy to pay for the extra two days as we had assumed that's what we were doing anyways.
At this point, we refused to sign. Alicia showed us the apartment, which is when we found out that the reason we could not get the keys that day was that they were replacing the carpet. It was scheduled to be done on April 12, but they just could not guarantee what time it would be done. So to save the problem of saying it would be ready and having it not, they didn't want us to have the keys until April 13. If that Regional Manager had simply said that, we would have stayed. Instead she opted to yell and insult us and then walk out and slam her office door.
I spoke to Lisa the next day. She was under the impression we were going to sign the lease on April 11 and see the place, with the understanding we would be able to move in until April 13. This, obviously, is not the impression we got in our conversations with her. Regardless, if this were a matter of a simple misunderstanding of dates, we would have been annoyed but we could have made it work. Our problem and issue was not with the date - it was with how that woman spoke to us and treated us. If she had apologized and calmly explained to us why we could not move in (replacing the carpet), it would have been fine. But she didn't - she was flat out rude and there is no excuse for that. And ultimately that is why we were willing to forfeit the $260 we had paid, because we wanted nothing to do with living in a place run by a woman who treats the people who live there like that.
PS: The pictures are of the good side of the complex. Our unit was over an office building and faced the McDonald's and the parking lot, as does most of most of the complex.
